Why Vaccinations Matter at Every Age
How Vaccines Protect You and Your Community
Vaccines help you fight off certain infections. They transfer harmless versions of a pathogen (bacteria or virus) into the body, training your immune system to identify real pathogens and eliminate them effectively.
Getting vaccinated protects you from illness and helps to prevent the spread of infection to other people in your family and throughout your community. When most people are vaccinated, infections are slower to spread. By slowing the spread of infections, people who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons are also protected.
The Role of Immunizations in Preventive Care
The goal of preventive care is to keep you healthy by avoiding illness. Vaccines are a critical part of preventative care because they protect you from diseases like the flu, measles, and other potentially dangerous illnesses.
Our Vaccination Services
Altais offers a wide range of vaccination services tailored to your needs. Whether you are a parent ensuring your child’s health or an adult seeking protection, we are here to help.
Vaccines for Children and Adolescents
We’ll help your child’s immunization schedule stay on track. Vaccines for children and adolescents include the following:
- Hepatitis B Vaccine: Hepatitis B is a highly transmissible viral infection that can lead to serious liver complications like liver cancer later in life. There is no cure.
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine: RSV is a respiratory infection that can severely inhibit breathing, sometimes requiring hospitalization and mechanical respiration. Infants and younger children are particularly vulnerable to RSV.
- Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP) Vaccine: These three conditions are life-threatening at all ages. Pertussis, also known as Whooping Cough, is particularly serious for infants and babies.
- Polio Vaccine (IPV): Polio was largely eliminated from the United States after widespread vaccination programs. Paralytic poliovirus causes muscle weakness, spinal cord infection, and paralysis in under 1% of cases.
- Chickenpox Vaccine: Chickenpox is an extremely contagious illness, characterized by blistering, rashes, and fever. While most children do not experience dangerous symptoms, the illness can be serious for those with compromised immune systems.
- Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine: This two-dose vaccine offers potentially life-long immunity from measles and rubella, though immunity from mumps sometimes decreases later in life.
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine: HPV is an infection that can cause several types of cancer later in life. The HPV vaccine is recommended for children aged approximately 11 years.
Adult and Senior Immunizations
The following immunizations are recommended for adults and seniors:
- Pneumococcal Vaccine: Helps prevent pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. Immunization is particularly beneficial for seniors and anyone with certain medical conditions.
- Shingles Vaccine: Protects against shingles and its complications, recommended for adults aged 50 and older.
- COVID-19 Vaccine: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends COVID-19 immunization for adults over the age of 18.
Travel and Occupational Vaccinations
Certain regions, particularly in the developing world, have high infection rates for diseases not typically found in the United States. Contact your healthcare provider for a pre-travel immunization consultation.
Seasonal Flu Shots at Altais
Although the flu is a common illness, it is still a potentially serious disease for children, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems.
Why You Need a Flu Shot Every Year
Because the influenza virus mutates and changes seasonally, a vaccination from a previous year might not be effective against an emerging strain.
A yearly flu shot is the best protection against potential complications from a flu infection. Even people in overall good health can experience serious, debilitating symptoms and complications from the flu.
Flu shots are particularly important for people who are in constant daily contact with vulnerable populations; teachers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers can benefit from regular immunizations.
When and Where to Get a Flu Shot
Flu shots are made available starting in early fall. Getting vaccinated early in the season provides the best protection. Walk-in appointments and scheduled visits make it easy to get your flu shot.
